Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in Canadians, affecting approximately 1 in 8 individuals over the age of 50. Given these significant statistics, regular eye examinations are crucial for early detection and management of AMD, which can help preserve precious eyesight.
We’re committed to providing the most advanced care for our patients, and we’re excited to now offer innovative red light therapy and comprehensive genetic testing as part of our expanded services, offering even more personalized and proactive approaches to managing AMD.
Genetic Testing for AMD
Did you know you can assess your risk for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) with a simple genetic test offered at Eye Q Optometry? The quick and painless cheek swab provides valuable information about your genetic predisposition to AMD.
With this information, we can take a proactive, personalized approach to monitoring your eye health and recommend preventive measures that may help slow the disease’ progression. The test takes approximately 30 seconds per side and we get the results back in about 4 weeks. Results include genotyping of AMD markers and subsequent vitamin recommendation, 10-year risk for progression to Wet AMD or Geographic Atrophy, and Genetic Risk Percentile.
Genetic testing for AMD: $350 (no tax)
Customized Vitamin Therapy Based on Your Genetics
One of the most exciting benefits of genetic testing for AMD is the ability to tailor vitamin therapy to your unique needs. Research indicates that specific nutrients, such as zinc, can influence the progression of AMD differently based on an individual’s genetic profile.
Approximately 1 in 6 people (15%) with intermediate or severe AMD carry a genotype that may cause their condition to progress 2-3x faster on the traditional AREDS2 formula. These individuals may benefit from a similar formula which omits the zinc altogether.
At Eye Q Optometry, we offer Vision Essence, a specialized Canadian-made brand that provides low-zinc and no-zinc options, as well as an Early Defence option for those with no or early AMD. Based on your genetic test results, we can recommend the best version to support your eye health and help minimize the progression of AMD. Proper supplementation helps increase the protective macular pigment and reduce oxidative stress. Vision Essence uses vegan capsules, which are allergen-friendly, and make for easier digestion. It is only required once per day.

Vision Essence Low zinc, or no zinc: $79+tax for 90 day supply
Photobiomodulation (aka Red Light Therapy) with Arunalight
Patients at Eye Q Optometry can now purchase Arunalight, an innovative at-home device designed to support AMD treatment. These 670nm wavelength red light-emitting glasses use photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as Red Light Therapy, to stimulate retinal cells and reduce oxidative stress.
Research has shown that PBM can enhance visual outcomes for AMD patients by improving cellular function and reducing inflammation, much like how athletes utilize red light therapy for muscle recovery. By incorporating PBM into your treatment plan, we can help slow the progression of AMD and support overall vision health.
PBM with Arunalight is noninvasive, safe, and scientifically recognized for its potential benefits in AMD management. Designed for convenient at-home use, Arunalight is the only home-based PMD or Red Light Treatment Device approved by Health Canada for ocular use. A simple 3 minutes every other day with your eyes closed can lead to better visual outcomes.
Arunalight Red Light Therapy Device: $499+tax
Packages Offered: free 90 day supply of Vision Essence with purchase of both Genetic testing plus Arunalight within 30 days
